Fire Door Inspections

Fire doors are required in almost all buildings. The principal regulations and instructions relating to fire doors is contained within the Building Regulations 2010 Approved Document B Volume 2, 2019 edition. Fire doors play an important and vital role in the overall fire safety within a building. They must be of the correct specification, installed to the required standard and maintained thereafter for the ongoing safety of all the occupants of the building.

Fire doors help slow the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building, not only to protect lives, but also to protect the property and neighbouring buildings. This only applies, however, if they are correctly maintained in a working condition.

The BWF-CERTFIRE Best Practice Guide recommends that fire door surveys/inspections are carried out every 6 months.

Since the uncovering of drastic failings of passive fire protection in various building fires such as the Grenfell Tower disaster, the importance of suitable checks of passive fire protection has been significantly highlighted.

A fire door assembly not only includes the door leaf, but also the frame, doorstops, seals, hinges and hardware. If just one of these components becomes worn or faulty, it may have a detrimental effect on the performance of the fire door should there be a fire.
